Open data
What's in it
Products tagged Australia or New Zealand in Open Food Facts that have a usable name and a per-100g energy value. Obsolete entries and products marked as having no nutrition data are excluded, as are entries whose figures are impossible — energy above 900 kcal per 100 g, or more than 100 g of a macronutrient per 100 g.
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
code | Barcode (EAN/UPC) |
name, brand | Product name (English preferred) and brand |
qty, serving | Pack size and serving size, as free text |
pop | Open Food Facts popularity key — scan counts |
kcal … satfat | Energy and nutrients per 100 g |
countries | Where Open Food Facts says it's sold: AU, NZ or AU,NZ. For Australia only, WHERE countries LIKE '%AU%' |
There's a second table, foods_fts, an FTS5 full-text index over name and brand. It holds one row per name-and-brand pair — the most-scanned of any duplicates — so searching returns distinct products rather than the same jar in six sizes. Every product remains in foods, so barcode lookup covers all of them.
How it was built
From the Open Food Facts Parquet export, filtered with DuckDB and written to SQLite. Nothing is added or invented. A few dozen rows are corrected where Open Food Facts' figures contradict the product's own label, most often a kilojoule figure entered as kilocalories. Each one is listed, with the label figure it came from, in fixes.csv.
SELECT code, product_name, brands, quantity, serving_size,

WHERE coalesce(obsolete, false) = false
AND coalesce(no_nutrition_data, false) = false
AND (list_contains(countries_tags, 'en:australia')
OR list_contains(countries_tags, 'en:new-zealand'))
